Getting a dog completely changed our lives for the better, Rocky is part of the family.
Since getting him as a boisterous Beagle pup he has given us so many moments of happiness and fun, we couldn’t imagine life without him now. It’s fair to say we have spent a lot on him over the past 3 years, and that experience has very much influenced what we stock in our dog boutique.
We only want the best for our best friend, and our mission is to provide that for our customers too.
After 18 months of wanting to leave our fast paced, stressful life, working long hours and commuting into London every day, a change in circumstances meant that we had a chance to really look at what we wanted in life and make a change that would be better for all of us.
In 2016 we had already booked a holiday to Padstow with our Beagle Rocky, so the day after Lynz finished work we packed up the car and made our way to the coast, little did we know it would be the start of a life changing journey for us all! It was Mike’s first time in Cornwall, we had a great week and couldn’t believe with all the dogs here that there wasn’t a shop dedicated to dogs in the area.
We always wanted to run our own business but had never really been sure what it could be, until we went to Padstow and the opportunity seemed obvious! The following week we went to Portugal just the two of us (Rocky doesn’t have a passport!) and all we could talk about was launching a dog boutique in Padstow!
When we got back to the UK we spent the next 3 months researching the opportunity, getting information from the local community and organisations like Visit Cornwall, whilst also starting to research what brands and products we would range. In the new year we made the decision, we were going to do it! We very much believe that life is just too short. What if we didn’t do it and then regretted it? So, we sold our house and started to build relationships with our suppliers, we went to trade shows and started to pull our branding together with a local creative agency in Cornwall.
There were many trips to Cornwall through the Winter of 2016/17 and there were many bumps in the road, not just on the lovely A30!! We missed out on two houses, and on another shop premises too, but we were determined to make it work so we kept going. With 3 weeks left to move out of our house, we secured somewhere to live, and the plans at Trevisker were getting more and more exciting.
We signed the shop lease then the following day found out about another bump…. we were pregnant! So, in 2017 we were set to move counties, launch our first business and have a baby….. all in the same year!!! At least Rocky was our constant through all this, tail wagging and ready for cuddles at the end of a long day!!
We moved to Cornwall in March 2017, worked hard with the team at Trevisker to get our shop ship shape and opened on 13thApril, with the local celebrity and brilliant business woman Jill Stein OBE cutting the ribbon to our shop door! We were very honoured, and since then we haven’t looked back. Of course there have been highs and lows, but we’ve learnt a lot and we have lots of exciting things to come this year.
We frequently enjoy lovely feedback from local customers and tourists alike that visit. Not just about the shop or the range we stock, but also about our approach and advice. It’s great to know we can help people and they enjoy shopping the unique range we have been able to source, with many brands being exclusive to us in the local area.
Rocky has had a great time, he loves being on the coast and chasing people on Rock beach for their pasties in particular!! Our daughter Ava was born in October and has already come along to many meetings, and we love raising her in such a lovely place.
There are more exciting things to come from us in 2018!
